The release of the 2004 Reserve Pinot

It’s been a long time coming but here it is- the Wedgetail Reserve Pinot Noir 2004

It’s been 5 years since we released a Reserve Pinot Noir and that was the 2002 vintage.

It was pure coincidence that just after typing you this letter, the wine was rated ‘Wine of the Week” in yesterday’s Sydney Morning Herald.  The full review appears below.  Needless to say the demand on our tiny quantity will now be even stronger – so I do hope you can come along and taste it for yourself later this month.  If you can’t make it, just phone me on 03 9714 8661 and I will be happy to reserve some for you before it inevitably sells out.

For Wedgetail to release a Reserve Pinot, the wine must meet several criteria:

1- It has to come from a great vintage.

2- There has to be a significant difference between the reserve barrels and the Estate Pinot barrels. For example, in 2005 all barrels were great and very similar.  So I was in a dilemma – should I make it all reserve or all Estate?  Since offering great value for money is one of our philosophies, we made the 2005 all Estate.

3- There must be enough great wine each year to allow us to separate some of our best barrels for the Reserve, while still retaining great quality for the Estate.

The Reserve Pinot is usually sourced from the vines on the top of the hill, just next to the winery.   This location is demanding for the vines, low moisture and high wind exposure, resulting in a low crop and therefore more concentration in the wine.  In this case less is more.

That concentrated wine is aged in new oak barrels from the finest French coopers, resulting in a very elegant but at the same time concentrated wine.   The intense aroma has notes of raspberries, lavender and chocolate.  The palate has power - well structured with a delicate finish .

We have changed the Reserve label to give it a new fresh look. 2004 Reserve Pinot

The blue sky and white clouds are still there-the eagle as just flown a lot higher this time .
